Can Sliding 5th-Wheel Hitch be Kept in Rearward Position

Question:

My Curt 20k Slider Hitch was installed last week. The Hitch is about 6 inches forward of the rear axle which makes hauling my 5th wheel very tight and limited turning. However when the Hitch is in the maneuvering position it is right ontop of the axle which is where I always understood the 5th wheel should be. Would I be okay to tow in the maneuvering position since its directly on top of the rear axle and not behind it?

Expert Reply:

A fifth wheel hitch should remain in front of the rear axle, like how your Curt A20 # C16541 sits when not in the rearward position. It is not recommended to tow a fifth wheel trailer while the hitch is slid in the rearward position, as this will remove too much weight from the front axle and cause issues with steering and braking response.

You should only slide your hitch all the way back during low-speed maneuvering to ensure that you have enough clearance between the trailer and the cab of your truck.

I have attached an article on fifth wheel trailer hitches that you may find helpful.
