Recommended Bike Rack For 4 Bikes On 2017 Honda CR-V

Question:

Trying to figure out whether the Kuat NV 4-bike configuration will work well with a 2017 CR-V using the Draw-tite #76128 hitch. The owners manual states a 1500lb towing limit but otherwise only gives guidance that the tongue weight should be 10 of the trailer weight, rather than stating an outright tongue weight limit. The Draw-tite hitch has a 675lb tongue weight rating. So what is my true weight limit? If Im limited to 150lbs then the Kuat isnt going to work, in fact even a Yakima Fullswing is going to be pushing it. I suspect the answer is somewhat higher but where?

The Kuat NV 2.0 Base 4-Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches - Aluminum - Tilting - Matte Black # BA22B-BA02B is an excellent bike rack with the wheel holding ratcheting hooks that lock. The sliding ratcheting straps give you the ability to carry bikes of various lengths. The integrated foot lever lets you tilt the rack away and fold the rack up when not in use. The hitch lock and cable locks secure the bikes and the rack itself. This carrier weighs 82 lbs. Based on the limits given by the manufacturer, that gives you 68 lbs to carry your 4 bikes. Depending on your bikes, this could be really easy or really difficult to operate within the constraints of.

If you have medium weight bikes, I recommend the Thule Apex Swing 4 Bike Rack for 2" Hitches - Swinging # TH9027XT. This rack has a weight of 55 lbs and that gives you 95 lbs to work with for 4 bikes which is a little more reasonable. This rack has the integrated bike lock and a really nice swing away feature for easy cargo access and also comes with an integrated hitch lock with anti-rattle. I also recommend the Swagman Deluxe Bike Frame Adapter Bar for Women's, Children's, and Alternative Frame Bikes # 64005 for level transport and better ground clearance.

I don't know why Honda limits their tongue weight to 150 lbs on this model, but they do. If you want to look at a bike roof rack option that will increase your ability to carry 4 heavier bikes on your vehicle if you use a hitch mounted rack and a couple roof bike racks.
