Installing 5-Way Trailer Connector On My 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe w/ Tow Package
Question:
I have the trailer package two plugs on driver side under car. Id like the 5 pole connector for the brake lock-out. Is that supported via the Hyundai plugs or do I need to grab a back-up light? Also, why does the kit need to be mounted in the car? Id prefer a box on the hitch.

You will need to plug in a 4-Way harness into your tow package and then use a 5-Way adapter. You will need to use tow package wiring # 118258 to first equip your vehicle with a 4-Way plug.
Once the 4-Way is installed, you will then add a 4 to 5-Way adapter, 20036, which will need to be connected to the reverse light circuit as you mentioned. You will just plug the adapter into the new 4-Way and hook up the reverse light wire to complete the installation.
Most of the wiring of part # 118258, including the square modulite box, is kept inside the vehicle to protect it from the elements, but the 4-Way plug is routed underneath the vehicle and you can use a box mount for the 4-Way or in your case the 5-Way trailer connector. The 4-Way plug of part # 118258 will be connected to the 5-way adapter and mounted to the hitch.
To mount the 5-way adapter to your hitch, you can use Mounting Bracket for Wesbar 5-Pole Flat, part # tr20046, and Short Bracket, part # 18140.
I have linked instructions for the Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, part # 118258, and a video installation of the 4 to 5-Way # 20036.
