Troubleshooting Uneven Wear on Trailer Tires
Question:
My current rig on the right side tires which have been on the rig 5 years have wore to the belts on the inside and out side of each tire. I am running 80 lbs of air in each and check them before each trip. Usually both tires are down some from the 80ty when I check them. The tires on the right side of the rig have not wore the same way. Their tread ware is the same all the way across the tire. Can you tell me why this has happened? Thanks for your help.

When a tire wears more on its inside and outside edges more than it does in the center of the tread this usually indicates that the tire was under-inflated. If a tire wears more in the center than on its outsides this usually indicates over-inflation.
All trailer tires, no matter their type, size or weight rating, should always be inflated to the cold psi pressure indicated on the tire sidewall. It is never appropriate to under- or over-inflate a tire for a specific load or driving conditions. Trailer tires will meet their specs for speed and weight capacity only when inflated to the full cold psi pressure noted on the tire.
