Recommended Platform Bike Rack for 2017 Subaru Forester to Avoid Rear Bumper Interference

Question:

I had a DT-36523 hitch installed on my 2017 Forester and and now my 10+ year old Thule T2 hits the back of the vehicle when folded up. So, Im looking at getting a new platform hitch rack. I measured the new hitch, and it is recessed from the edge of the back bumper to the centerline of the pin approximately 6 5/8. Ive looked at the specifications of two Kuat racks: the NV 2.0 and Sherpa 2.0. Would both of these racks clear the back of my vehicle when folded up? Is the pivot foot assist optional or standard on the Sherpa? What is the benefit of the foot assist? Thank You

Thank you for the hitch pin hole to bumper measurement you provided on your 2017 Subaru Forester. It is a big help!

Using your 6-5/8 inch measurement, I recommend the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 2-Bike Platform Rack # SH12G. The closest part of this carrier when it is folded up towards your vehicle will be 7-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole. You will not have any interference issues with this carrier hitting the rear of your Forester. This is a very nice 2-bike, platform style rack that includes both a hitch and cable lock to secure the rack to your trailer hitch and the bikes to the rack. The foot lever is a nice convenience feature that allows for easier folding/unfolding of the rack. If you imagine loading or unloading your bikes onto the rack, you may see why using your foot to engage the folding mechanism might be nicer than having to bend over and use your hand.

I have attached a video demonstration on this rack for you to check out.

The Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Platform Rack # KU74FR also mentioned in your question will contact the rear of your vehicle when folded up. The closest part of this rack when folded up to the center of the hitch pin hole is 6 inches, which is less than what you need to avoid this interference.
