Why Does 5th Pin of 5-Way Adapter Run to Reverse Light on Tow Vehicle

Why do you connect the additional wire to the back up light on the vehicle?

The fifth circuit of a 5-way is commonly used for the reverse lock out of a trailer with surge brakes. Since that is the most common use of the 5th circuit that's why it's recommended to be installed there. If you have a different need you can attach it to a different circuit.
