For your 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 the Prodigy P3 part # 90195 would be an excellent option for a brake controller that is confirmed as a fit. All you need is the correct install harness, part # 3016.
The best place will be up to where it will work best for you. You want it to be level from side to side and facing the rear of your vehicle squarely. You also need it to be close enough that you can reach it easily and grab the manual override lever quickly in case needed.
