Can Rear Hatch on 2016 Jeep Renegade be Opened with Trunk Mount Bike Rack Installed

Question:

Hi, Once the rack is strapped to the back door of the Jeep renegade, will the door be able to open and close like normal operation? Obviously you would have to take the bikes off but it would be nice if the rack didnt have to be removed just to use the trunk.

Trunk or hatches cannot be opened with a trunk mount bike rack installed. There are a few reasons for this. First the hatch on your 2016 Jeep Renegade could fall unexpectedly since it isn't made to handle additional weight. But the biggest concern is with the upper straps and hooks. When you open a hatch or trunk the opening the hooks fit into changes shape. Since the hooks are much thicker metal than what is on the vehicle it will bend the vehicle metal. I've seen it happen.

To be able to open the rear hatch with or without the bikes loaded and avoid any issues I recommend a special kind of rack that fits in a trailer hitch. First you would need a hitch. I recommend # 76021. This is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver. It's a perfect match for the swinging rack, the Yakima FullSwing # Y02465. This 4-bike rack swings to the side, to completely get out of your way so that you will have full access to the back of your vehicle, with or without bikes loaded.
