The trailer hitch size that allows you to use the widest variety of accessories would be a 2 inch hitch like the etrailer Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98865. This hitch is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Chevrolet Equinox and will enable you to choose from a bigger selection of bike racks, cargo carriers and other accessories. It has a max Tongue Weight of 350 lbs and a Gross Towing Weight of 3,500 lbs.

If you have the tow package on your Equinox then all you will need for a 4-Way is the Curt T-Connector Wiring Harness # C56210.

If your Equinox uses a 2 wire system (right turn/stop and left turn/stop) then you will want the Curt T-Connector # 56094 to add the 4-Way harness. You will just plug it into the connection at the rear of your Equinox.

If you have a 3 wire system (right turn, left turn, and stop on separate wires) then you will need to install T-One Wiring Harness # 118494 for the 4-Way. This harness will combine the right turn with the stop signal, and the left turn with the stop signal, which is the wiring combination that trailers use. With this harness you will need to run the black wire up to the battery for power and you will need to install a fuse as well.

Some people only need the 4-Way at the rear of their vehicle, but I recommend going a step further and installing the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7 as well. Since you will already be install wiring on your car, you can install this wiring harness in addition to your 4-Way. This wiring harness will give you a 7-Way and a 4-Way connection point at the rear bumper of your Equinox. For a drill-free mounting bracket, I recommend using the TrailerMate # C57202 bracket to keep your harnesses from just freely hanging.

I also recommend using the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2 inch Hitches # 989900 which is a good starting place for towing. You will want to review the attached article about Rise and Drop to make sure that the included shanks have the correct rise and drop for your application. If they are not, I have attached a link to our selection of ball mounts for you.

Check out the articles and demonstration videos that I attached for you to watch as well.
