Recommendation on a Brake Controller to Fit a 1997 Dodge Ram Truck

Question:

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500. I am probably going to buy a tilt utility trailer with 5200lb axles and both axles will have brakes. What brake controller would be best for this set up? And are they all as easy to install as they are made to look in the videos. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the solution for you for a brake controller to fit your 1997 Dodge Ram truck. However, there are a few items you will need install first before you can install the controller in the cab of your Ram.

First, you will need to install a 4-pole flat trailer connector harness. You will need the T-One Vehicle Harness, # 118329. This harness will allow you to connect to the turn, brake, and trail lights of your Ram without cutting or splicing into the vehicle's wiring.

Next, you will need to wire in a 7-way trailer connector. The # ETBC7 7-Way Trailer Harness Kit will allow you to wire the 7-way and also run the wiring needed to install your brake controller. The kit will include all the parts and wiring needed to connect your brake controller to the 7-way connector.

Finally, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, # 90885, for your 1997 Dodge Ram. The P2 is a proportional controller which means it will apply your trailer brakes at the same intensity you apply them on your truck. The P2 comes with 3 boost levels for greater adjustability and has a continuous diagnostics check that will alert the driver if there is any issue between truck and trailer.

I have linked an installation video and a couple help articles on brake controller installation for you to review.
