How to Measure Total Tongue Weight When Deciding on a Weight Distribution System
Question:
So, I have searched and searched the web and read everything about how to weigh a tongue weight but cannot find an answer: Is the recommended 10-15 TW measured with the WD connected when you are using WD hitch? Because using a Sherline, you are measuring without WD. Which # is correct for hitch downward force safety and controlling sway?

When trying to decide on a weight distribution system you need the total tongue weight of your towing rig. This includes a fully loaded ready to tow trailer and any cargo that will be located behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle.
When you are weighing the total tongue weight will do this without a weight distribution system installed. You will need to know the total tongue weight before you can choose your weight distribution system. I have attached an article that will show you how to find your total tongue weight and how to use the etrailer Tongue Weight Scale, # e99044.
Once you have your total tongue weight, you will be able to look at the tongue weight ranges of the WD systems. For an example, if your total tongue weight is 800 lbs, you could choose a system like the Equalizer System with Sway Control, # EQ37100ET. This particular Equalizer system has a tongue weight range of 600 to 1000 lbs. The idea is to have your tongue weight in somewhere in the middle of the system's range. This will allow you to have the most effective system for your towing application. Too high of a rating can cause damage to trailer and vehicle components and too low of a rating will defeat the purpose of the system.
I have linked a video for reference on the Equalizer system and two help articles for you to review.
