A 2006 Chevy Silverado is prewired for a brake controller whether it has a factory 7 way or not. For your brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 because it is an easy to read and understand controller that is adjustable to your preferences. It has 3 levels of boost and doesn't require any code deciphering. You will get the information you need at a quick glance. This controller will activate your trailer brakes with the same amount of force and at the same time as you hit the brake pedal in your truck.
This brake controller will connect to the junction box beneath your dashboard using the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - GM # 3015-P.
If you don't have a 7-way connector at your bumper, you can use the Replacement Multi-Tow 7-Way & 4 Pole Trailer Connector # 74682 or the Pollak 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket - Vehicle End # HM40975.
