Tips for Finding Taillight Wiring on Hatchback Vehicle

Question:

eTrailer.com lists a trailer wiring harness for the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV, Code 56146KIT, but the only videos/instructions included with this wiring harness are for vehicles with the rear lights mounted in the quarter panels. The rear lights for the Bolt EV are mounted in the rear hatch, not the rear quarter panels. I’m not sure I can figure out how to install the trailer wiring harness in a 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV without some instructions more specific to this vehicle. Do you have any instructions for connecting to lights that are mounted in the rear hatch?

What you will need to do is find the rubber conduit that carries the wiring from the hatch lights to the door frame of the vehicle. Typically this is at the top of the door. If you look for a black rubber hose that runs from the hatch to the door frame that's what you need. Inside this will be the wiring for the taillights.

You will need to use a circuit tester like what comes with the # C56496 to test the wires to find the correct circuits.
