Bike Transport Options When Towing a Pop-Up Trailer

Question:

Hi. I tow a popup trailer with a drawbar ball height of 19 1/2inch , so I use a 3inch rise drawbar, which sticks up near the bumper. Does this trunk bike rack hold a bike high enough to allow hitching up my trailer and plenty clearance for safe towing. Or, does a different trunk rack hold the bike higher? Looks like you can adjust the bike holders at a higher angle to hold the bike higher? I am looking at roof mount Yakima Forklift Y02098 also. I do hear you lose mpg with the bike on top. I have an idea also that you could weld or bolt the rooftop rack to the trailer tongue crossways behind the coupler...

If you have an a-frame type trailer frame a great option for transporting bikes is the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk # CC-275. This bolts on to a trailer's frame and fits frames from 14- to 55-inches wide. It provides a 2-inch receiver opening that can accept an RV-rated 2-inch bike rack. RV-rated bike racks are shown on the linked page. Please note that you cannot use a standard car bike rack on a trailer, it must be rated for RV's.

The trunk-mount Yakima FullBack 2 # Y02634 is a confirmed fit on your vehicle. You just might need to use a longer ball mount to provide more clearance between the bikes and trailer; note also you lose use of the rear wiper when a trunk-mount rack is installed.

Any object on a vehicle's roof can affect wind drag and therefore fuel economy. But since you will already be towing a trailer the slight additional drag from roof-mounted bikes will not have a dramatic effect on your overall mileage performance. If you prefer this option then the Yakima ForkLift roof bike carrier # Y02098 will work fine on your Subaru factory roof crossbars.
