There are two different brake controller systems that can be used. The Older style is the Time delayed style of brake controller, like the Draw-Tite Activator Trailer Brake Controller, item # 5504. This controller will get the signal from your brake pedal and then apply the trailer brakes at a, user set, pre-determined level no matter how fast the vehicle is stopping. There is also a delay setting so that the trailer brakes can be set to activate shortly after the vehicle brakes so they do not apply when you momentarily press on the brake pedal.
The second system now uses an accelerometer. The Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, item # 90885, that you mentioned employs this technology that comes from the aerospace industry. I recommend a brake controller with this type of technology and the P2 is an excellent choice. When you apply the vehicle brakes the brake controller is signaled to operate and the accelerometer applies power to the trailer brakes in proportion to the speed in which it senses the vehicle stopping.
The brake switch circuit is only providing a signal to the brake controller, telling it that a stopping event is occurring and that the brake controller should take action to apply the trailer brakes not matter which system is being used. The power going out to the trailer brakes is provided from the vehicle battery and the brake controller is regulating that power in one of the above ways.
For your 2004 Durango you will need a brake controller, the P2 would be great, a 4-way trailer connector, item # 118390, if you do not already have one, and a Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC7. These items will include everything you need to install the brake controller and trailer wiring at the rear of the vehicle. We have detailed instructions, see link, on our Brake Controller Installation from Scratch page and I have linked instructions for the P2 brake controller and the 4-Way harness for you to review.
I have also linked video installations of the above parts on Dodge Durangos for you to review, this should help you with the installation and any questions you may have.
