Parts Needed to Change Boat Trailer to Allow Using Larger Wheels & Tires
Question:
I would like to change the suspension on a boat trailer to accommodate 4 larger tires. Currently I am using 4 small, almost golf cart size tires which actually came with the trailer. The boat being trailered is a 24foot pontoon. I have pictures and specs to assist. Thanks you.

In order to see if you can use larger wheels/tires on your pontoon boat trailer you'll need to check a few things. Checking with the trailer maker, using the trailer VIN, is a good idea too. The manufacturer may be able to offer you some guidance specific to your particular trailer.
For new larger wheels to fit your existing hubs they must use the same wheel bolt pattern. I linked an article that will help you confirm which bolt pattern your wheels use. New wheels and tires must also be appropriately rated for the weight capacity of the trailer's axles. Keep in mind that switching to larger wheels/tires does not increase the trailer's weight capacity. That capacity is determined by the manufacturer based on the combination of the trailer's frame structure, suspension/axle rating and that of the wheels and tires.
In order to use substantially larger wheels/tires you may need to increase the clearance in your wheel wells/fenders to make room for the wider and larger-diameter tires. You need to maintain at least 3-inches of vertical clearance at the top of the tire to allow for normal suspension travel as you drive over bumps.
You will also probably have to install all new spring hangers that are taller. This will give you some of the height clearance you may need. We offer hangers in various heights that can be seen on the linked page.
