Recommended 7-Way Plug and Brake Controller for 2008 Ford F-150
Question:
I have a 2008 Ford F150 STX extended cab It has the factory 4 way plug and I want to add the 7 way plug for my 18 ft camper. I took it to a trailer store here in town and they said the wires to hook it up are under the rear of the truck, they said I would need to to a partial hard wire of the wiring. They also showed me the plug under the dash that the trailer break module needs to be plugged into. Could you let me know exactly what I would need to buy to add this to my truck with minimal cutting of the wires? I would need the break module all the wiring and the 7 way plug. Thanks

For your 2008 Ford F-150 STX, I'd recommend the Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller, # 39510. This has proportional braking, so the trailer brakes will respond exactly in proportion to the tow vehicle's braking. It does have power and sensitivity adjustments so you can fine tune to your unique needs. The Tekonsha Plug-in Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers, # 3035-P, is what plugs in under the dash of your 2008 Ford F-150 and connects to your brake controller .
For the wiring at the rear of the vehicle, I'd suggest the Hopkins 4-Pole to 7-pole and 4-Pole, # 37185. You'll need a little extra wire like the Deka Jacketed 2-Wire 10 Gauge Brake Wire, # 10-2-1, and some butt connectors like the Deka Heat Shrink 12-10 Gauge with Nylon Insulation, # DW05745-5.
I've attached a video that shows you how to do the complete install the shop told you about on a 2009 Ford F-150. Don't worry about the part number difference in the video because the 2009 model year has a different wiring harness. The install steps will still remain true for your 2008.
