Brake Controller Does Not Have Full Power When Used
Question:
When I first used the dx2 all was fine. When I used the brakes in my Ford the dail would show how much was applied when loaded or empty. Now when I pull or bobtail thedail only shows 1.9 tops. Before it would reach between 5.5 to 13 or so. Do I have a loose wire? I have tried adjusting the wheel but nothing happens or changes. The manual slide works fine. Ant help would be greatly appreciated as we are leaving in two days on a short trip.

First, I would go to the 7-way connector and test to make sure you have power. You will want to use a circuit tester, part # PTW2993 to test the wires. Start by testing the Black wire for power, then test the blue wire for brake controller output. To test the blue wire you will need to have a friend help you. With the vehicle in power accessory mode, in park, and parking brake engaged, have them activate the brakes.
Next I would check to make sure the Red Stoplight wire is connected and functioning when the brakes are activated. The red stoplight wire runs from the brake controller and is connected near the brake pedal. Then, check under the hood to make sure all the wires are connected and that there are no loose connections.
Then, I would check the brake controller by using the manual over ride switch a few times to activate the brakes manually. What you will want to do is just move the lever all the way over and let go. Do this a few times to activate the brakes, then try activating the brakes normally with the brake pedal. Sometimes, over time with the time-delayed brake controllers dirt or debris can cause the brake controller to not function properly.
Next, you could check inside the connectors. Check the vehicle side connector to make sure there is not any corrosion, do the same on the trailer side connector. If there is corrosion inside the connectors, you will need a new connector.
If the vehicle connector has power and everything is hooked up, the problem may be on the trailer. As stated earlier, check the trailer connector for corrosion, make sure there are no loose or bad connections going into the connector. Then, inspect the wiring along the trailer, make sure there are no loose connections or frayed wires. Check the grounds on the brake assemblies. If the wiring on the trailer is good, then you will want to take apart the hubs and check your brake magnets. You will want to inspect the magnets to make sure there are not windings showing and that they do not need to be replaced. If the magnets are bad, they will not have the full grabbing power, which could explain why there is weak braking.
