Drum and Hub for 1979 VIP Boat Trailer

Question:

Im in the process of rebuilding a 1979 VIP single axle boat trailer and Im having an issue trying to figure out which hubs I need to replace the ones that came on the trailer. I can say its a 5x4.5 with lug BOLTS instead of nuts. Ive replaced the wheels and tires, which are also larger than the ones that came on it. The stock hub is smaller than the rims that seem to be on every other trailer Theyre gone now. The outside bearing is a L44649, I cant however get the back bearing out to see the size. This is where my problem sits. I was wondering if boat trailers of this era have a standard bearing. Unfortunately I couldnt find anything on the axle, other than a sticker stating that it came equipped with bearing buddys. The trailer lists a 3,000 GVWR, however no listing on the axle. Thanks!

With a single axle trailer that has a GVWR of 3000 lbs. it is highly likely that you have a 3500 lbs. axle. In which case a great hub and drum assembly for you is # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K. If you only need the idler hub then you will need # AKIHUB-545-35-EZ-K.

Both kits include the bearings, races, and seal you will need as well.

It's unlikely both bearings are the same. If your spindle tapers then your inner bearing will be # L68149 which is the bearing that comes with these hubs.
