To find the reverse light circuit on a vehicle is pretty easy but it may take digging around in the door panels or interior panels of the vehicle. What you need to do is find the wires that lead into the reverse lights on your vehicle. Test both of them for voltage with the vehicle in reverse (parking brake on and trusted friend applying brake), whichever wire has voltage is the correct circuit to use.
The adapter we recommend for converting a 4-way to a 5-way is the part # 20036. The blue wire of the adapter gets ran to the reverse light circuit.
I attached a video that shows how this is done on a 2015 Toyota Highlander which will be nearly identical on your 2016 Toyota Highlander.
