Recommended Weight Distribution System With Sway Control For 5000-Lb Trailer
Question:
I have a 2005 chevy Tahoe Z-71, we just bought our first travel trailer, a 25ft flagstaff, weighs about 5,000 lbs. I would like to know whats the best for weight distribution ans sway control. I have seen several different ones, just dont know much about them. Whats the difference in the pro series and the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System, other than price? Can you explain friction control? Can you explain the trunnion system?

To find the best weight distribution system you will need to know the total tongue weight. This would be the tongue weight of your trailer when it is full loaded and ready to tow added to the weight of any cargo you place behind the rear axle. You want the total tongue weight to fall near the middle of the weight distribution system tongue weight range for best performance.
One difference between the Reese and Pro Series systems is the design of the sway control brackets. The Strait-Line system has a bracket that is bolted to the frame and has an arm with a bracket that the spring bar attaches to. This bracket provides tension to help control sway. The Reese system uses a friction control sway bar that attaches to the shank and bolts to the trailer frame. To be honest the replacement parts are harder to come by for the Pro Series. Between the two I recommend going with the Reese system.
The major difference between the round bar and the trunnion bar system is that the trunnion bar system provides more ground clearance.
If you have 700-750 lbs tongue weight I recommend a system like part # EQ37100ET. This system is designed for tongue weight between 600 and 1,000-lbs. The system also features 4-point sway control. The downward pressure on the hitch ball and the spring bars added to the friction control in the head reduces sway before it happens. You can back the trailer up when using this system versus other systems.
If you want to let me know what the gross towing weight is I will make a recommendation that will work for you.
