Troubleshooting Titan BrakeRite SD Electric-Hydraulic Actuator Kit
Question:
I have purchased a used trailer that has the SD controller. Previous owner used A Ford truck to tow. I have a 15 GMC for tow vehicle, controller appears to have stopped working? Is controller necessary if Im using a GMC. Tripple axel trailer How can I troubleshoot controller?? When emergency pin is pulled the elec motor runs, but no response when brake pedal is applied. Thanks.

Good news, I can help you troubleshoot your Titan BrakeRite SD # T4835700 on your trailer.
First thing to know is that a braking system is necessary when pulling a trailer equipped with brakes. The BrakeRite SD system is a good system for Electric over Hydraulic (EOH) brakes which it sounds like your trailer has.
Since you have an EOH system on your trailer you will need to have a compatible brake controller on your 2015 GMC. If your GMC has a factory integrated brake controller with an EOH mode then this system should work, but may be malfunctioning in a different way, which I explain below.
If you have a factory integrated brake controller does not have an EOH mode you will need the Titan # T4845900 to make the brake controller compatible with the BrakeRite unit.
If you have an aftermarket controller like the Tekonsha P2 # 90885 or P3 # 90195 which are EOH compatible the unit should operate correctly when in EOH mode.
If you have an aftermarket controller that isn't EOH compatible you will need the Titan # T4845900 to make it compatible.
If your brake controller is EOH compatible then the unit is malfunctioning in a different way. According to the troubleshooting guide for the BrakeRite SD system it indicates that if the unit does not run with the vehicle brake pedal is depressed you will want to verify and connect wire connection in the entire electrical unit. Since the unit is functioning properly when you pull the breakaway switch, the first connection I would check and test is the one from the SD controller to the BrakeRite unit, highlighted in green on the attached diagram. With a circuit tester like the # 3808. The next wiring portion that could be malfunctioning is the one that is highlighted in purple. You will want to test the wires going into and coming out of the SD wiring harness for proper function.
After replacing any malfunctioning parts, if you continue to have issues with this, just let me know, I would be more than happy to help you continue to troubleshoot this issue. I have also linked the instructions to the BrakeRite SD unit to this page for your convenience.
