How to Remove a Hub from a Ram Line Jet Boat Trailer with Damaged Bearings.

Question:

The bearings on my boat trailer went out. I would like to replace them. On the near end of the axle is a ridge that will not come off. Is it supposed to? Iit looks like it is attached to the whole axle. Is there a special kit that I need to replace bearings for this..Please advise.

Unfortunately, it sounds as if when your bearings went out you were towing the trailer and the inside of the bearing that contacts the spindle, bearing cup, got hot and galled itself to the spindle on the trailer. This happens many times when bearings fail and can require replacement of the whole axle in the most extreme cases.

I would try to remove the bearing cup by prying with a pry bar or screw driver and lubricating the spindle. If that doesn't work try more aggressive techniques. If any of these techniques are used, care needs to be taken not to heat the spindle to such a degree that it is weakened.

My first attempt would be using a dremel rotary tool with a cut off wheel. Carefully cut the the bearing cup, without cutting into the spindle and then remove it with a pair of pliers. If this does not work then you will need to find a qualified weldor that can cut the offending part off of the spindle without ruining it. In any case you should have the spindle checked by a qualified person who can determine if it is safe to continue to use. If the spindle is galled too badly or has ridges cut into the surface it will need to be replaced to safely tow the trailer.
