Truck-to-Trailer Clearance Pullrite 2700 and 2014 Ram 2500

Question:

Hello, I have a question and an issue I would like advise with. My question: I have a Pullrite 2700 in my 14 Ram 2500 Mega Cab 6.4 bed and I was curious which bolt hole I am supposed to use to secure the hitch to the base rail feet. There are several bolt holes on the hitch and Camping World used the first holes available closest to the tailgate of my truck. I am trying to put a low profile tool box in, but I do not have the depth clearance due to the rails extending to far toward the cab. If I adjusted the hitch further back using the extra bolt holes, I would be able to accommodate a box. I could not find the specs on which bolt holes to use, so I figured I would ask the experts! My issue: When I am traveling on uneven terrain or going up over a curb, I have had my 5th Wheel strike my bed rails. This has happened on both sides of the truck and I just recently had to replace my bed rail caps. Can my king pin box be adjusted to give me additional clearance to prevent future bed rail strikes? I have a 2015 Pacific Coach Works Powerlite 29FS if that information helps and the above mentioned Pullrite 2700. Thank you for your time.

Your 16K PullRite 2700 hitch appears to be installed correctly, so that the king pin weight will be centered just slightly forward of the rear axle center, which is where it needs to be to maintain front axle traction. Your hitch does provide for some front-to-back adjustment but you do not want to contradict the installation instructions for this hitch in your particular truck model and bed length.

The pin box mounting wings on a 5th wheel trailer usually offer multiple sets of holes to allow you to select the mounting height for the pin box. Lowering a pin box's mounting position on these wings gives more height at the nose of the trailer and will provide increased clearance at the bed rails. The linked diagram shows the recommended minimum clearance dimensions between truck and trailer. You can reposition a pin box vertically but you want to try to keep the hitched trailer as level as possible for best handling.

PullRite's instructions for the 2700 indicate they recommend at least 6-inches of clearance at the bed rails to allow for the hitch to pivot side-to-side. Aftermarket bed rail caps can increase this required clearance if they take up some of that 6-inches.

Your best option is going to be a different style of tool box that will not compromise your towing clearance. Our main page for tool boxes is linked for you.
