How to Select Correct Wiring Harness for 2006 Jeep Liberty

Question:

I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty that I am going to add your tow system to, but when looking at the wiring kit I see there are two options, one for if you have factory 7 way, and one if you dont. My question is how can I tell? I saw another answer that said one of your employees was going to provide instructions on how to check to see, so I would like those too. Thanks for your help.

A local Jeep dealership can run your Liberty's VIN through their computer to tell you if it was equipped with a factory tow package, but you can also just check under the rear bumper to see if there is a wiring connector that looks similar to the one shown in the linked photo.

This image shows male/female connectors included with 4-pole harness part # 42475. The 7-way harness # HM42190 also uses a rectangular OEM connector. Both of these harnesses are for tow-package-equipped vehicles.

If there is no OEM tow package connector under the rear of the vehicle then you can use a 4-pole harness like # C55382, shown in the linked installation video, which is a simple plug-in installation. This 4-pole harness provides 3-amps current output per stop/turn circuit and 5-amps for the taillights.

If your trailer lights will draw more power than this, then instead I suggest the powered converter harness # 118524 from Tow Ready since it outputs 4.2- and 7.5-amps per circuit. This harness will take a little longer to install because it has a separate power wire to handle the current drawn by the trailer lights, but it will provide protection for the Liberty from shorts and other faults in the trailer wiring. I linked an install video and also an article that will help you with routing that power wire.

Please feel fee to tell me what type of trailer connector you need (4-pole flat or 7-way RV style) and what connectors you find under the vehicle and I will be glad to recommend the appropriate part.
