Brake Controller Installation on 1999 GMC Yukon

Question:

I would like to get a nice proportional controller for my 99 yukon with tow package. I have a 4 pin connector in the back, and then I also rummaged around up between the bumper and spare and found two heavier-gauge wires, dark blue and orange. I assume these are for maybe power and brake signal from controller... but I dont know where they come out on the other end. Am I supposed to use these? Thanks!

You can indeed use the wires you've found. They terminate under the brake booster, where they should be bundled up (they might be hard to find, given that the wires are likely covered with road grime. Follow the brake lines down from the master cylinder, you should find the bundle of wires right near where the brake lines start running under the vehicle.

Even though those wires are run, you could still use most of the items included in the # ETBC7 brake controller installation kit. The kit includes the 4-pole to 7-way adapter, which would plug into your existing 4-pole, leaving 4 loose wires remaining. The white wire grounds to the truck's frame. The purple wire is usually used for a trailer reverse light circuit, but if the trailer doesn't have reverse lights, you can just bundle the wire up out of the way. The blue wire would connect to the blue wire you found under the vehicle and the black wire would connect to the orange wire you found.

In the engine compartment, the blue wire would be lengthened with wire from the kit and would run into the passenger compartment where it would connect with the blue wire exiting the rear of the brake controller. The orange wire leading from the rear of the vehicle would connect to the positive battery terminal via the 40-amp circuit breaker included in the kit.

In the passenger compartment, the brake controller would mount under the dash within easy reach of the driver, preferably to the right of the steering column. The blue brake controller wire connects to the blue wire ran from the rear of the vehicle. The black wire and white wire would be lengthened and ran through the firewall to the positive and negative battery terminals, respectively. Install the 30-amp breaker included in the kit inline on the black wire. The red wire taps into one of the wires exiting the brake stop lamp switch, located atop the brake pedal. Use the circuit tester included in the kit on each wire until you find the circuit that only shows voltage with the brake pedal, not the turn signals or headlights. Tap the red wire into the wire when you find it.

The Prodigy P3 brake controller you've looked at, part # 90195 would be an excellent choice. The controller is extremely easy to use and features easy to read and understand controls that are very user-friendly.

I'll link some FAQ articles for you, along with the instructions for the ETBC7 kit, as well as to an install video showing a brake controller being installed on a 1999 Chevy Suburban. The procedure on your Yukon would be identical.
