Recommended Bike Rack to Prevent Damage to the Vehicle for a 2010 Mazda 3 Sedan
Question:
Hi, We have a 2010 Mazda 3 sedan. It appears as though there are a few options to purchase for a trunk mounted 2 bike carrier. Saris and Thule seem to have the most options. One concern we have is damage to the car. Can you kindly give us your opinion on which would be the best option for our car. We sometimes use mountain bikes as well as road bikes. Thank you for your help

Honestly, the best way to prevent scratches or damage to your vehicle's paint is going to get a hitch mounted rack like the Thule Camber # TH9058.
If you would still prefer a trunk mounted rack I recommend the Thule GateWay Pro # TH88VR, because it has the anti sway cradles and the upgraded bike cradles and includes the locks to secure the bikes to the rack. This bike rack will also allow you to adjust the cradles to accommodate the space needed for the handle bars. I have linked a video of this rack for you to check out.
We typically recommend a fresh wash and wax before installing any trunk rack. It is important that the rack be installed securely to reduce bouncing or movement, which causes scratches. But honestly it is the nature of the location of the rack and the elements it encounters while on the road. Dirt and debris will get caught by the rack and then rub against your paint. You would have to be extremely careful and plan on cleaning the rack and vehicle on a regular basis to reduce the amount of scratches.
If you decide you would rather go with a hitch mounted rack for a bike rack like the Thule Camber # TH9058, I mentioned earlier then you will need a hitch for your vehicle. The hitch I recommend for you is the Curt # C11393. This Class I hitch will provide your vehicle with a 200lb tongue weight which is compatible with the Helium. The Helium will have the same adjustable anti sway cradles as the trunk mounted rack but will allow the bikes to sit further away from the vehicle to prevent any damage. You will want to check your owner's manual to make sure your vehicle is rated for that much tongue weight. Typically this is also listed on the placard in your driver's door. If you find it isn't just let me know, I would be more than happy to help you further.
If you happen to have any alternative framed bikes, like women's bike often are, you will want to use a bike adapter bar like # TH982XT to mount the bike properly.
