Do Hitches need to be Torqued to Specifications for use with a Bike Rack

Question:

This hitch has a 37lb-ft torque specification. We are only using this hitch for a bike rack. We dont own a torque wrench. For a bike rack is it acceptable to hand tighten the bolts on this hitch? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Properly torquing down the hitch bolts is necessary to the proper function of the hitch as well as preventing damage to the vehicle.

Toyota provided weld-nuts inside the frame to make installation easier. But, they will break free if over-tightened and an average adult male can exert in the neighborhood of 60-70 ft.-lbs. with a 1/2 inch drive socket wrench.

Auto parts stores often rent specialty automotive tools and they may rent torque wrenches. You could also tighten the hitch down and then head to a nearby shop and ask them to make sure they are torqued down to 37 ft.-lbs.
