Tow Bar Lighting Recommendation for Towed Vehicle with Separate Taillight Circuits
Question:
I have a motor home with separate turn signals and a truck I tow with separate turn signals. Thinking this was a no brainer I wired it up that way until I realized that the signal for the brake lights from the motor home was coming through the turn signals. I assume there is a converter somewhere on the motor home. I dont want to do any rewiring on the motor home so I was looking at #118158. I think this will work but I cant find any amperage specifications on it. Most of the converters Ive found only have 2.1 amps for the brake lights which seems a bit low for brake lights that could be on for an extended period of time in traffic. Please leave me know your thoughts on this. Thanks

I spoke with my contact at Tow Ready about converter # 118158. He said that at most the converter is rated for 2.1 amps per side for brake and turn signals.
For lighting you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillight assemblies of the towed vehicle. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you will install on the front of your towed vehicle and enough coiled wire to go from there to the RV.
This will wire the taillights up to operate like the combined circuits of your RV which will work just fine and will be the easiest way to do it.
