Are Brake Controllers and Wiring Harnesses Universal for a 2012 Ford F-150

Question:

Do you need to use the same mfg. for both the controller and wire adapter?

In some cases a brake controller wiring harness will fit the brake controller from a different manufacturer but for the most part each manufacturer has a specific connector type at the back of the unit and you won't be able to use the harness from a different manufacturer.

For example, if you have a P2 controller # 90885 and want to hook it up to your 2012 Ford F-150, the correct harness is # 22292. But you could also use harness TM76292.

But these harnesses will not fit any other brands of brake controllers. I have linked a video showing how these harnesses install on a 2012 Ford F-150.
