Does the Dutton Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch Have an Automatic Brake

Question:

When I stop cranking this winch, will the load be safely locked at that point of winching or will it unwind? Also, can this be cranked to either reel or unreel? if so does the breaking apply in either direction?

The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL10965 that you referenced will lock the load at that point of winching when cranking is stopped. The reel automatically stops turning whenever cranking is stopped, holding the load in place.

There is no free-wheel mode, which means that the gears will not turn unless they are cranked. To unreel the cable from the winch you will have to crank the gear until you have released the desired amount of cable. The gear lock will occur while both reeling and unreeling the cable.

You can use a variable speed drill with 1/2 inch shaft and 5/8 inch socket to crank the winch faster.

I have attached a review video of this winch for you.
