Tow Bar Wiring and Tow Bar Recommendation for a 2016 Ram 1500 with Blue Ox Base Plates
Question:
I have a 2016 Ram 1500 ecodiesel, and bought the RM-154 kit. Watching the video on the 2013 you have, and looks like I have more wires and some slightly different colors. Would there be any difference in the install from the video. I can pin out wires to check them. Also just installed the blue ox base plate kit on our 2016 Ram 1500. Took a lot longer than video, but got it done OK. What will be the best tow bar setup to tow this pickup truck. Would rather have one with two inch ball, but can got the solid shank route if necessary. Truck weights about 6,000.

Since there is no standard for wire color and function, I recommend using the video only as a guide for the installation procedure. You will want to test the wires on your 2016 Ram 1500 using a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 to determine the functions and make the right connections.
Base plate installations aren't easy so it's awesome that you not only took on that project yourself but also that you completed it! Well done, sir.
The compatible Blue Ox tow bars that couple to a ball are only rated up to 5,000 pounds and would be insufficient for your 6,000-pound Ram. The most cost-effective compatible tow bar is the Alpha, # BX7380 rated for 6,500 pounds. It also includes safety cables. The next step up is the Avail, # BX7420, rated for 10,000 pounds and also includes safety cables. I have linked video reviews of both tow bars for you.
