On your 2008 Toyota Tacoma with no towing package you will need to install the Tow Ready Vehicle Wiring Harness, # 118496. It is a plug-in connector so there is no cutting or splicing required. This harness will plug into a connection located behind the vehicles taillights and will give you a 4-pole flat trailer connector at the rear of your vehicle.

You will also need to hardwire your 2008 Toyota Tacoma for the brake controller by using the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7.

The Installation Kit, # ETBC7, comes with a new 7-Way and 4-Way trailer connector which will plug into the 4-pole flat trailer connector that you will have installed on the back of your vehicle.

I am sending a link to instructions and a video link that will show the # ETBC7 install kit being installed on a 2008 Toyota Tacoma and attachment of the 4 extra wires for the 7-Way connector.

To Install the Hopkins Brake Controller, # HM47294, you can use the Hopkins Plug-in Simple Brake Wiring Adapter, # HM47815, and plug the one end to the brake controller and you will have to cut off the plug end that would normally plug into the factory port, if your vehicle had a factory tow package. The 4 wire colors are black, white, red and blue and will need to connected as follows:

The 4 brake controller wire functions are:

White: Ground, attached to a clean piece of unpainted metal.
Black: 12v lead, attached to the vehicle positive battery terminal with either the 20amp or 30amp circuit breaker included in the # ETBC7 kit. Use the 20amp breaker if your trailer has 2 to 4 brakes, or the 30amp if the trailer has 4 to 8 brakes.
Blue: Electric brakes, attach to the blue electric brake wire on the 7-Way and 4-Way trailer connector in the # ETBC7 kit at the rear of the vehicle.
Red: Stoplight switch, normally located directly off the vehicle's brake pedal.
