Troubleshooting Tekonsha Prodigy P3 and Trailer Brakes When Brake Controller Reads Constant Voltage
Question:
I installed Tekonsha P3 on a 04 Silverado 1500 4x4 and Im pulling an 18 foot car hauler I purchased used its a 99. We checked the brakes they have plenty of pad left we adjusted them so that you could feel them drag a little. It seems to work OK but I can turn it all the way up and turn the boost up and still cant get the the brakes to lock up, and when Im driving with my foot off the brakes the controller still says its sending current to the brakes only 1 or 2 volts it goes up and down between 0 and 2 volts. The trailer brakes havent been used in a long time

First I recommend using a multimeter, like # PT89ZR, to test the 7-way and each brake magnet. This will help make sure that the proper amount of voltage is reaching your trailer brakes. I have attached a help article indicating the amperage and volt readings the brakes should be giving.
If full power is reaching the brakes, you will want to test each brake magnet individually. Steps for testing individual brake magnets is included in the help article I attached for you.
Another component to check is the trailer brake grounds. We recommend running all brake grounds to the main trailer ground.
To try and solve the problem of the brake controller giving a voltage reading when the brake pedal is not pressed I recommend checking the mounting location of the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller # 90195. You will want to ensure that the controller is mounted on a level horizontal plane, and lined up with the direction of travel. When the controller is not mounted properly, the internal sensor may not function properly.
You can also test the red wire on the brake controller harness to ensure that the wire only has power when the brake pedal is pressed.
If the brake controller is mounted properly and the red wire is functioning correctly, there may be a problem with the brake controller. The brake controller may need to be replaced.
