Trailer Hitch, Wiring, Brake Controller, Helper Springs and Accessories for 2007 Toyota Highlander

Question:

Im considering towing a popup style camper with a 2007 Toyota Highlander, V6, two wheel drive. Trailer max. weight 3500 lbs. Is Addition of a brake controller, suspension enhancement and a class III with sway control the best way to go? Or should I consider adding a weight distribution system? Thanks for any help.

First, consult the vehicle owners manual to make sure your 2007 Toyota Highlander trailer weight capacity is high enough to tow the trailer.

The trailer hitches for your Highlander are not rated for use with weight distribution so you will not need a weight distribution system. For a trailer hitch the most popular option is Curt hitch # 13530. It is a Class III hitch rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. I have linked a video showing installation for you.

Since you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

To install a brake controller you will first need to install a 4-Way trailer connector, # 118248 if your Highlander has the factory tow package or # 118413 if it does not have the factory tow package. Then you would need installation kit # ETBC7 to add the 7-Way connector and add the provisions to wire in a brake controller.

For a brake controller I recommend the P2, # 90885, because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.

You can add sway control by using ball mount bracket # RP26003 and a bar style unit, # 83660. And for help with the rear suspension you can use Coil SumoSprings # CSS-1168R for more support.

Your owners manual may also state additional equipment will be needed such as a transmission cooler or power steering cooler. The most popular supplemental transmission cooler is # D13503. For a power steering cooler the most popular option is # D12213.
