Tongue Weight Capacity on Old Hidden Hitch 70737 is Lower than New Version on 2003 Honda Odyssey

Question:

The Hidden Hitch #70737 on my 2003 Odyssey shows a gross tongue weight of 300 lbs, yet the #75270 replacement hitch shows 350 lbs. As they are the same in functionality, do you think the 300 lbs was a conservative estimate put on the 70737? Can I therefore expect a funtctional 350 lbs out of the #70737? I really would appreciate your expert advice!

Expert Reply:

When the old 70737 was designed, produced, and tested it was deemed to have a 300 pound tongue weight capacity. Any more than 300 pounds and it would be overloaded. You should never exceed the stated capacity of a hitch since that is what it is safely tested at.

If you want a higher tongue weight capacity then you could replace the hitch you have with # 75270. But be sure to check the owners manual for your 2003 Honda Odyssey. Always go by the lowest rated capacity, the hitch or the vehicle, whichever is lowest.
