Parts Needed to Tow Aliner Scout Pop-Up Camper with Electric Brakes

Question:

Well, first off, I dont have a clue what I am doing just so you know... Anyway, we have a 2015 Kia Soul with a nice Curt Trailer hitch we have used for a luggage carrier. Now we are looking at a lightweight Aliner Scout pop-up RV/Camp Trailer that needs a Break Controller and 7-Pin Charger Connector whatever that is?. I dont know if I need two things or a package that includes both. We need the chargerfoot bit to connect to the RV battery to charge and run small refrigerator while moving. The Aliner comes with electric breaks so need the controller thing. Can you help or suggest which gizmo I need? I read that a proportionalfoot break controller is best. Total wet trailer weight will be about 1300 pounds Im guessing. Hitch weight about 180 or less. Thanks.

The Curt hitch offered for your 2015 Kia Soul is a light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I type, part # C11419, that has 200-lb tongue weight (TW) and 2000-lb gross trailer weight (GTW) ratings. But, and here's a big but, your 2015 Soul is NOT recommended for use to tow any size trailer. Kia indicates that this lightweight vehicle simply is not designed for towing a trailer.

The hitches that are offered for it, again all are light duty Class I types, are made to allow hitch-mount accessory items like 2-bike racks and small cargo carriers to be used. Availability of a hitch for a vehicle does not necessarily mean that the vehicle has a towing capacity. This is the case for many other smaller vehicles too, not just your Soul.

But if you were going to tow a trailer with electric brakes you would need the controller itself, such as the Prodigy P2 # 90885 proportional controller, an installation kit # ETBC7 and a 4-pole wiring harness # 118637. These parts are all that is needed to have trailer lighting and brake signals and 12V power sent to your camper.
