If your truck was not delivered from the factory with a 7-Way connector the brake controller connector you found under the dash is most likely not wired to the rear of the vehicle and may not be fully functional.

Use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 and check the connector. You should find a constant 12-volt power source and a stop light switch power source that has voltage only when the brake pedal is pressed. If those circuits are working in the connector, you can use the wiring going to the connector to connect to the brake controller. If those circuits are not present, you will need to hard wire the controller from scratch (see link). I will outline the steps below for you.

You will need to order the Tekonsha P-3 Trailer Brake Controller, item # 90195, without the connector since hard wiring will be required. You will also need the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC7, which has all of the hardware and wiring required to complete the brake controller and 7-Way connector installation.

Once you have these items you will plug the 4-Way on your vehicle, from your # 118496 wiring harness, into the 4 way on the back of the 7-Way connector. Next, you will run the white ground wire to a clean rust and paint free chassis ground. Now you will use the duplex cable, in the kit, to run the brake feed circuit and the 12 volt power circuit for the trailer connector to the front of the vehicle avoiding areas that could cut, pinch or melt the wiring. Connect the Blue wire from the trailer connector to the white wire in the cable and connect the black wire to the black wire. The black wire will be ran to the positive battery post through a 40-amp circuit breaker to provide 12-volt power to the trailer connector. The white wire will be connected to the blue wire coming from the back of the brake controller.

Next, you will need to ground the white wire on the brake controller to the negative post of the vehicle battery and run the black wire to the vehicle positive battery post through a 20-amp circuit breaker for trailers with 2 axles and a 30-amp circuit breaker, for trailers with 3 or more axles, if this circuit was not found at the connector you mentioned. The remaining wire on the trailer connector can be tied up out of the way or wired as a reverse light circuit.

Under the dash you will connect the red wire to the stop light circuit found at the brake pedal switch. Use a circuit tester, item # 3808 if needed, to determine the circuit that has power only when the brake pedal is pressed. If the connector mentioned earlier has this circuit, you can use the wire going to this connector for this purpose.

After all of these connections have been made you should have a functioning brake controller and 7-Way connector on your vehicle. We have a video installation of a hard wire on the 2008 Toyota Tacoma for you to review.
