Choosing a Class I Bike Rack for 2006 Mazda 5

Question:

I own a 2006 Mazda 5. It will only take a class I 1-1/4 trailer hitch. I need to use the hitch for a bike rack for two bikes and the bike rack states it must be a 1-1/4 inch class II hitch. Since my Mazda only can have a class I hitch... can it use a class II hitch 1-1/4? Total weight of rack and bikes is 110 pounds.

Expert Reply:

You cannot use a bike rack that is listed as a Class II Only rack with a Class I hitch. Due to their lower tongue weight capacity, Class I hitches have a metal stop inside the hitch opening that will prevent the accessory from sliding all the way in. You must use a bike carrier that is not listed as working for only class II 1-1/4 inch hitches the Thule Apex, # TH9024XT, would be a great choice, it is a high quality rack that works well with Class I hitches.

I added a video review of this rack for you to see all the features this rack has.
