Expert Reply:
Typically when a fifth wheel trailer is installed in the bed of a truck the center of the jaws of the hitch where the king pin will sit will be either right above the rear axle or slightly forward of it.
For your 1997 Ford F-250/350 with a short bed it will end up being right at 1-1/2 inches forward of the rear axle.
To determine the distance from the pin to cab of your truck you will need to measure 40-1/4 inches from the rear edge of the truck bed. That is where the center of the king pin will be. Measuring from that point to the cab of the truck will be the dimension you are looking for.
