To determine the offset needed on your 2009 Ford F-250 short bed, you need to take the width of your trailer and divide by two. Then measure from the gooseneck hitch ball in the truck to the back of the truck cab. That dimension should be 4 inches more than your first measurement for correct clearance.
For example, if your trailer measures 96 inches wide, take half (48 inches), then add 4 inches (52 inches). So if the measurement from the gooseneck hitch ball in the truck to the back of the truck cab is 52 inches or more, you will have enough clearance for the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter, # AM3100.
If the short bed on your truck is less than 6 foot, you will need to use a Sidewinder mounted on a standard fifth wheel hitch, without a slider, like aReese Elite Series 18K Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch, # RP30144. Also needed is a Reese Signature Series 16K/18K Fifth Wheel Hitch Installation Kit, # 30073. That setup will give you the clearances you will need. I will send you a link to Sidewinder information for short bed trucks.
As far as the offset placing more torque on your trailer frame, anytime there is a change of where the connection is located, there will be extra torque put on the trailer frame, but the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter, # AM3100, is designed to handle any extra torque.
You would need to check with your trailer frame manufacturer on what their trailer can withstand.
