Installation and Towing Capacity of Curt Motor Home Trailer Hitch 13703

Question:

I am interested in buying one of these trailer hitches. Multi-Fit Motor Home Trailer Hitch, 47inch - 71inch wide. And I have some questions. If I measured correctly, my frame is 68 inches - center to center. How does a person adjust this hitch so that it is 68 inches center to center???? What does these two Ratings mean??? : 300 lbs Tongue weight 3,500 Gross tongue weight. Thanks for you help with this.

The Curt Motor Home Trailer Hitch # 13703 that you referenced uses sliding side brackets to adjust its fit to the frame of a motor home. These bolt onto the main cross tube and then the brackets bolt to your MH's frame. This hitch fits frames widths up to 72-inches as measured from the outside edge of one frame rail to the outside edge of the other.

Tongue weight (TW) is the measure of downward force on a hitch. For example, if you installed a motor-home-rated bike rack that weighs 40-lbs and loaded two 35-lb bikes, that would be a total TW load of 110-lbs. Please refer to the linked article for more on TW.

Gross trailer weight (GTW) is the maximum allowable weight of a trailer and its contents.

Typically a properly loaded trailer's TW will be 10 - 15% of its gross weight. So a properly loaded trailer that weighs 1500-lbs total should have a TW in the range of 100 - 150-lbs.
