Can Electric Trailer Brakes for 7,000 Pound Axles be Used on a 4,500 Pound Trailer

Can I put 7000lb rated brakes on my 4500 lb dual axle trailer. Its for a horse trailer.

You might be able to use 7K brakes on your trailer provided that the drums used are large enough and that the mounting pattern for the brake assemblies matches the pattern on the brake mounting flanges on the axles.

Brakes for 7K axles are going to be 12x2 inches and have a 5-bolt mounting pattern.

You will likely find though that the brakes will be overly aggressive on lighter trailers. It is recommended to use brakes that are of the appropriate capacity for your trailer's gross trailer weight for proper and safe braking.
