Platform Bike Rack Recommendations that Offer the Most Stability

Question:

Trying to I.D. bike carrier I recently traveled behind and beside a pickup truck with a bike carrier, and was impressed with how stable it was. I was unable to see a name or model on it, and I am trying to identify the brand / model for possible purchase. I have looked at all of your platform hitch models, and I can’t see one that looks exactly like the one I observed. This was a hitch mount carrier for two bikes. I don’t think it was a Kuat Sherpa as the front and rear wheel carriers were not in direct horizontal line, one tire was lower than the other for each bike. It looked similar to a Kuat NV in that one wheel sat lower than the other there was a stabilizing bar that ran at a 45 degree angle up to the wheel area it appeared to be able to be folded down for clearance . It was silver or gray in color However, it differed from the Kuat NV in these features: Near the front of the unit near where it entered the truck’s hitch, was a very large noticeable circular part that I believe enabled the unit to be folded down. However, this circular piece appears to be much larger than the Kuat NV’s folding part and it was located further toward the vehicle near where the unit went into the hitch, and was clearly visible from the side without being visually blocked by the front bike. There were reflectors on the back of the wheel carriers Any idea what brand or model this was – was it perhaps an earlier version of a Kuat NV.

Based on your description it's pretty hard to say for certain what rack you saw. I do have a way to help you though. If you check out the road course videos I attached to the right you can see how stable a bike rack will be while loaded and traveling.

I attached videos for the Kuat NV # NV22G, the Swagman XTC2 part # S64670, the Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack # Y02443, and the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider # HLY84FR. All of these racks are very similar and are very popular racks that we offer.

It looks like the Kuat and Yakima offer the most stability so I would recommend either. For the price I would go with the Yakima.
