The 2012 Tacoma doesn't have the connector under the dash for installing a brake controller but all's not lost, you can still hardwire the brake controller. We have the resources to walk you though the install, step by step.
You'll first need a brake controller like the Tekonsha P2 you referenced, part # 90885. You'll then need our brake controller installation kit, part # ETBC7. The kit includes an adapter that would plug into an existing 4-pole trailer connector to convert it into a 7-way. If your Tacoma doesn't already have a 4-pole connector, you'll need to install one using part # 118409. The install kit contains everything else needed to install a controller, including hardware, circuit breakers and wire.
I've linked you to the installation instructions for the kit, plus an install video showing the kit being used to install a brake controller on a 2009 Tacoma. The procedure shown in the video would be identical to that of your truck.
The Hopkins # HM43385 7-way you referred to is a fit for the Tundra, but it isn't compatible with your Tacoma.
