Replacement Idler Hubs for Antique Home-Made Trailer with 3500-lb Axle

Question:

I have antique home-made trailer. I attempted to install new rims/tires but could not find rims that would except stud with 3/8inch diameters in 5 lug pattern. All seem to be 1/2inch these days. So now Im thinking, that updating to new hubs with modern tire size, that I can easily find anywhere would be the plan. I am looking for idler hubs no brakes with inner Timken 15123 ID 1-1/4, outer Timken 09067 ID 3/4, and grease seal ID of 1-3/4. Weight range of total trailer should be 3500lbs, and tire lug pattern is whatever you think is easiest to find at box stores in future.Tire size could be 8inch to 12.

All of the idler hubs we offer for 3500-lb axles use the same bearing set, L68149 and L44649, and in fact none of the idler hubs we sell have the bearings used in your existing hubs - please see linked page. This means that you will need to have a professional welder change out your spindles - or instead do what I suggest - change out your axle entirely.

Since your trailer is "antique" there is an obvious safety benefit to replacing the entire axle/spindle/hub assembly. You will also avoid the potential need to tear things apart again when an old part decides to give out. Fortunately, we do offer complete axle kits that include everything you'll need. We even offer axle-less suspension systems from Timbren that bolt on to your trailer frame. The other link provided will let you see all 3500-lb-rated axle kits, all of which use a 5-on-4-1/2-inch wheel bolt pattern, which is quite common and easy to find.

For example, if your trailer can use an 89-inch axle with 74-inch spring centers you can use Dexter kit # 35545I-EZ-89. This includes the axle beam, hubs, bearings, races, seals, grease caps, wheel studs, lug nuts, and marine-grade wheel bearing grease. Please see the linked video.

If you prefer to gain some ground clearance you might consider the Timbren # A35RS545 with straight spindles or their # A35RD545 with 4-inch drop spindles if you prefer a low deck height.

With one of these kits installed you can choose tire/wheels in the 5-on-4-1/2-inch pattern using the link provided.
