Troubleshooting P-3 Brake Controller Installation on a 2001 Chevrolet 2500HD Cab and Chassis Model
Question:
I have a 2001 2500HD gas burner. The truck is a cab & chassis model with a utility bed on it. When I bought the truck it already had a 7 pin plug on the back, I bought a P3 tekonsha controler and the wiring kit for my truck, I plugged it up to the spot on the panel behind the brake pedal like the steps show but the controller doesnt do anything. Am I doing something wrong? Or could the truck not have factory trailer braking system in it? Thank you in advance!

The issue may be that your 2001 Chevrolet 2500HD cab and chassis model has the plug for the brake controller, but the electric brake and power lead wires are not run for it.
If you are not getting power to your factory brake controller plug, you will need to connect the blue electric brake wire and red power lead wire under your vehicle hood.
First, you will remove the bracket in the corner that is closest to the driver to access the accessory fuse block. Once you reveal the fuse block, you will remove the top and lower covers to access the two wires, which will be next to the block and on the cab side.
The red wire, which is the 12v wire for the brake controller, will have a ring terminal on it. Use the ring terminal to connect this wire to the closest positive post. You will also need to install a 30amp fuse in the block, in the port closest to the positive post.
The blue wire will have a plug, which will be clipped off. The blue wire under your hood would then be connected to the blue electric brake wire from the 7-Way plug.
I recommend taking a look at our FAQ on installing a brake controller on a 1999-2006 Chevy truck.
You should be using brake control wiring harness # 3025-P on your vehicle. If you do not have the correct adapter, the issue may be with the connector itself, which would mean you would just need to re-pin the connector to match your vehicle's factory port, or replace the adapter.
