Adapter to Convert 6-Pin Flat Trailer Connector to 7-Way

Question:

Have motor home 2006 Ford f-53. It has a flat 6 pin round female at the back for trailer hook up. Need to go to 7 round for car hauler trailer, with breakaway 12volt battery. Would like plug and play to new 7 round that I have to mount on motor home. Dont want to splice if possible. The motor home was sold new in Canada and lived there for years. Is this flat 6 pin hook up a Canada thing?? The reason I think that is because on iRV2 forum there was a Canada person talking about their 6 pin flat fitting. Thanks

I'm not familiar with a 6 pin flat trailer connector. What you describe might have been a proprietary connector Ford used on the F53 chassis for their factory 7-way to plug into.

Unfortunately, unless you can locate the OEM 7-way that would have the 6 pin plug on the other end, you'll need to do some splicing.

I'd recommend you begin by using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to confirm that what you've found is indeed a trailer connector. Activate each lighting function and test the sockets to see if you have signal. The green wire usually carries the right turn/brake, left turn/brake is usually carried on the yellow wire and the running light is usually carried on the brown wire. A red or orange wire usually carries the 12-volt power from the battery and the blue wire would usually carry the brake output voltage.

If the connector you found is active, to splice in a 7-way I'd recommend the Hopkins # HM40975-11998. The pigtail included with the connector uses a different wire color code that usual, see the bottom of the product description page for a description of the color coding.
