Slipper Springs vs. Double Eye Springs, Would Either Cause Severe Alignment Problems

Question:

Why the difference? My 2013 Big Tex 14ET trailer has the slipper springs and I would like to know if the slipper spring is what causes the tires to counter lean when making turns? The front tire leans outward and the rear tire leans inward. Is this normal? I am getting a lot of wear on the right rear tire - about 3 times the amount as the 3 other tires. It is wearing out the outside rib of the tire.

Helpful Expert Reply:

Both slipper springs and double eye springs will work just as well as the other as long as they are rated for the weight of the trailer. Typically slipper springs are seen more on the heavier capacity trailers.

The issue you are having would not have anything to do with your leaf spring style. You either have worn out suspension components on your trailer or the axle/spindle/hub has serious problems that need to be addressed. I would recommend you either examine everything I just mentioned looking for problems and fixing as necessary or take the trailer to a qualified trailer mechanic who can check the trailer out for you.

I attached FAQ articles on both styles of leaf spring setups to the right.
