Generally, I do recommend that all tires on your trailer be the same size at all times, so ideally your spare will match the existing tires on your trailer. With that being said, the difference between a 175/80-13 and a 175/80-13 tire is only 0.3 of an inch, so if needed in an emergency, the 175 spare tire should be fine to get you home.

The 1999 Oldsmobile Bravada wasn't equipped with prewiring for a brake controller.

There should not be power on the brake output wire unless the brake controller is sending back power. It sounds like something might be miswired at the 7-Way. Take a look at the picture I have included that shows the pin out of a vehicle side 7-Way trailer connector to make sure yours is wired the same way.
If it isn't then put the wires in the appropriate places. Also check to see if any of the wires are touching each other inside the 7-Way. And if the 7-Way is dirty or corroded that... view full answer...
The trailer wiring harness # 118384 installs into the standard round factory connector. I've attached a couple of pictures of what it looks like. One with a cap and the other is the connector itself. If your vehicle has the round connector, then the harness will work for you. Some are equipped with the connection port even if the vehicle didn't' originally have a 7-way trailer connector.

I spoke with my contact over at Curt about how you can test to see if the wire goes to ground when the pedal is up. You will need a multimeter, such as # PT89ZR, and set it to test for resistance (ohms). With the pedal up the correct wire will have a few ohms of resistance (he said 5 or 6 usually). If it shows zero then that means it goes to ground when the pedal is up and it is not the correct wire.

Brake controllers are not vehicle specific so you can use any one that you want. What I recommend is a proportional brake controller.
